Nagasaki (長崎) has historically been an international trading port. Even with Japan was isolated from the rest of the world, Nagaski was the sole port city that was allowed to trade with the outside world. As such, the city prospered and many foreign foods and spices spread throughout the city. One of the first types of snacks the spread in the region are butter cookies (like this one).
